A deep red alcoholic aperitif of the great Italian tradition created by infusing bitter herbs, aromatic plants and fruit into alcohol. It is drunk mixed with soda or tonic water with a slice or orange, with fruit juices particularly orange and grapefruit and is also used in many cocktails and long drinks including the American and Negroni.
